Tobias Vonstein is a mechanical engineer and an expert in optimizing products and manufacturing processes with numerical simulation.
He studied and researched at the Technical University of Dresden and the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences. In research he developed a finite element for coupling structural components in the overall simulation model of machines and assemblies. During his teaching, he worked in the fields of engineering mathematics, applied mechanics and numerical simulation methods.
He is firmly convinced that simulation is the decisive tool for the development of future-oriented products and manufacturing processes and thus for competitiveness. That is why he has been dealing with simulation democratization for many years, i.e. the question: How can more companies and individuals be enabled to benefit from simulation technology?
For him, the consistent use of open source simulation software is the key to success. He has been using the open source simulation tools Code_Aster and Code_Saturne for all simulation projects since 2012.
In 2012 he founded the engineering office for numerical simulation to support medium-sized companies and freelancers with the introduction and use of simulation in product development. In 2016 the sole proprietorship “engineering office for numerical simulation” became the partnership “Vonstein & Partner” with the entry of its current business partner Carina Wegener. Based on his many years of experience, he has developed a tried and tested system for this. Through his work, he makes an important contribution to simulation democratization in Germany, especially in the green industrial region of South Westphalia.
In order to advance simulation democratization further, he started the Simulation Democratization Blog. In his articles he shows how the potential of simulation in product development can be unleashed.
Carina Wegener is a mechanical engineer, data scientist and expert in big data, knowledge management and numerical simulation.
She studied at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences and has worked in several technology transfer projects with the simulation of fluid-structure interactions by coupling the finite element method with flow simulation (CFD). Among other things, she was one of the first to solve the numerically demanding TUREK benchmark with open source simulation software. In the field of industrial application, she worked intensively on the optimization of solar thermal collectors by analyzing the underlying thermal fluid-structure interaction using numerical simulation.
At a medium-sized industrial company in the industrial region of South Westphalia, she was then entrusted with the introduction of numerical simulation in product development. Based on her many years of experience, she was of the opinion that the use of simulation in industrial applications only unfolds its full potential if the simulation results are systematized and linked in a knowledge database together with the company’s existing experience. For this reason, parallel to the introduction of the simulation, it also introduced a knowledge database that supplements the existing empirical knowledge with each new simulation project and thus grows continuously. As part of this work, she was able to significantly optimize product development. Based on this success, she wanted to give other companies this unbeatable competitive advantage.
As she was already advised by Tobias Vonstein on the aforementioned project, she was of the opinion that his engineering office was the right framework to achieve this goal. That is why she became an equal partner in Tobias Vonstein’s engineering office in 2016, turning the sole proprietorship “engineering office for numerical simulation” into the Vonstein & Partner partnership.
